Brenner and Banks Named AAAS Fellows

December 18, 2008 -

UC Berkeley Professors Martin Banks and Steven Brenner, members of the UC Berkeley/ UCSF Joint Graduate Group in Bioengineering, were named 2008 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society.

They are among 486 new AAAS fellows to be named in the December 19 issue of the organization's journal, Science. Election as a Fellow of AAAS is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers. Fellows are recognized for meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications.

Martin Banks, Professor of Optometry, Vision Science and Neuroscience, was elected for his contributions elucidating the operating characteristics of human vision and its development. Asssociate Professor of Plant and Microbial Biology Steve Brenner was recognized for for computational biology research in the area of protein and structure classification, and for service to professional societies, including the co-founding of PLoS Computational Biology, teaching and committee work.
