The goal of our laboratory is to understand the role of oxygen in disease and metabolism. We previously discovered that chronic hypoxia could prevent and reverse mitochondrial disease in animal models. This work is now in clinical trials with the goal of human translation. Our current work is focused on three different aims: (1) systems metabolism and genetics understanding of all oxygen-dependent reactions, (2) identifying additional metabolic disorders which can be treated by low or high oxygen and (3) understanding how hypoxia can alleviate the cellular and physiological hallmarks of aging.
