The goal of our lab is to understand the neural mechanisms that underlie human motor control, study the pathophysiology when these circuits are disrupted in movement disorders, and restore these diseased circuits to their normal states using neuromodulation. We use implanted bidirectional neural interfaces to investigate the cortical-basal ganglia network dynamics that regulate gait, balance, and motor adaptation. Through our studies, we aim to not only build a conceptual framework for the neural control of these fundamental human behaviors, but also to develop targeted therapies to improve motor functions.
