Bioe alumna (Ph.D. 1998) and graduate faculty member Tejal Desai has been appointed Chair of the UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, effective August 1, 2014.
After earning her PhD in bioengineering in 1998 from the UC Berkeley – UCSF Graduate Program in Bioengineering, Tejal joined the bioengineering faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she was instrumental in developing new approaches to bioengineering education. In her subsequent position on the biomedical engineering faculty at Boston University, she served as the associate director of the Center for Nanoscience and Nanobiotechnology. Tejal joined the UCSF faculty as a full professor in 2005, and has served as chair of the Graduate Program in Bioengineering and as UCSF director of the UCSF – UC Berkeley Master of Translational Medicine program.
